I had the privilege to be on Tracie Hotchner’s ‘Dog Talk’ on NPR talking about frosty dogs in the middle of summer. The interview is about halfway through the clip -

Yippee. Hopefully more people will realize how loved and how amazing these dogs are. My life lights up every day I get to spend with them!!!!

The Sweetwater Grill opened up this past Monday in downtown Steamboat Springs. Featuring a beautiful new layout, the lounge now opens up to the lower deck for evening cocktails and entertainment. In addition, the upper level deck provides panoramic views of the Yampa River and Howelsen Hill. The menu and the atmosphere caters to families and adults alike.  The restaurant describes themselves as ‘committed to serving you healthy, natural, eco-friendly, local, fresh food with astonishing service.’ We stopped over for dinner yesterday and were very impressed with the new restaurant and are sure to visit again. The beautiful layout combined with the atmosphere and the great food are sure to help Sweetwater’s popularity grow throughout the summer and winter. Can’t wait to get back!

Hot Air Balloon Rodeo a Success!

The Steamboat Springs Balloon Rodeo had another successful year. Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association officials estimated that about 3,500 people went to the launch field for the 30th annual Hot Air Balloon Rodeo on Saturday morning. A beautiful and fun event in town, you can enjoy the balloons with your morning coffee at your home or you can go to Bald Eagle Lake and stand among the balloons as they inflate. A cool experience, the balloons attempt to complete a few ‘tasks’ in order to get points. One of the tasks was the lake skim, pictured above, where the drivers dunked the bottom of their balloon carriage into the lake.

Afterward, many spectators stopped by the 36th annual Art in the Park, an outdoor festival of arts and crafts by artists from across the country. ‘About 5,000 people were expected to visit the artists and take in live entertainment Saturday at West Lincoln Park.’

Seeing Werner without snow

Posted on09. Jul, 2010 by Andy.

For the first time in 15 years, Craig managed to glide beneath the lifts of Steamboat Ski Area in July.

The sky is just as blue, but the mountain looks entirely different in the summer- lush with raspberry, thimble berry, indian paint brush, ferns, fireweed, and of course the aspens in full flicker. It sounds more alive with songs of wrens, swallows, hawks, and the occasional hot air balloon. The curves of the open glades are permanent and rocky, the trees unpassable for the thick brush the coats their glens.

For us, who don't get to enjoy these runs all summer for previous lack of equipment, the Inaugural Custom Color Bikin' the 'Boat Camp was a new and amazing experience we look forward to continuing each year. Thanks to Steamboat, STARS, Adaptive Adventures and the four One-Off handycle mountain bikes from Freedom for Life, we all got to enjoy Mt Werner without the lifts running.

Due to the cost of these adaptive mountain bikes, many programs don't offer this recreation. But thanks to a local grant, STARS hopes to be continuing cycling in BikeTownUSA by adding 3-5 bikes to its arsenal for next year.

Writing Workshops

Posted on04. Jul, 2010 by DagnyMcKinley.

I recently drove to Boulder for a reunion with my teacher and some classmates at Naropa. Within a few hours I realized how much I missed having a writing community. So much has changed and taking on a full time job writing and editing has sapped my energy for new and creative ventures.

As part of trying to pass on some of the tools that have helped me survive in life, I started a workshop to integrate writing and nature. The first workshop took place this past week. I had a nine year old girl and her mother. We walked about twenty minutes to a gazebo overlooking a pond and river. The river gushed and birds tweeted and we took a few breaths and wrote about our surroundings. The next hour was filled with various exercises that got me out of my routine writing of Audrey Rose and pictures/writing of the dogs at Grizzle-T.

It was great to stretch the boundaries of where I have been writing and decided I had an idea for a new book potentially. Could be a lot of fun. So my advice: if you’re having trouble motivating with your writing, take a workshop or look up some writing exercises online. In the coming weeks I’ll be posting some exercises that were really helpful for me. Stay tuned!
