Rockslide closes I-70
Posted on09. Mar, 2010 by Sage Local.
The interstate’s closure created a detour to U.S. 40, which went through Steamboat Springs, Colorado. We had many vehicles going through downtown Steamboat due to this breathtaking rockslide. A tremendous rockslide on I-70, which was near Glenwood Springs smashed through a bridge and dumped boulders the size of tractor trailers on the highway, closing a 17-mile stretch of the road. The slide struck at about midnight just west of the Hanging Lake Tunnell in Glenwood Canyon. The collapse caused major problems for truckers and other motorists, who had to travel 200 miles to avoid the slide. They pronounced that as many as 20 boulders, ranging from 3 feet to 10 feet in diameter, his the interstate, Colorado Department of Transportation estimated that the largest rock weighed 66 tons and some were as big as semi trucks. Thankfully no one was injured or on this section of the interstate at that time.

Snowmobiling on Rabbit Ears
Posted on07. Mar, 2010 by Sage Local.
We woke up early yesterday morning to hit the trails up on rabbit ears pass. A 30 minute drive east of town we were all excited to try something a bit different. Taking the day away from skiing we went snowmobiling. I would recommend this to anyone visiting town, even if only here for a short weekend. Jumping on the small sleds we were privileged to take a small tour led by one of my friends. Beginning on the groomed path, we all quickly became accustomed to the dimensions and speed of our sleds and were cruising around 40mph in no time. After gathering ourselves we cruised off trail and glided through some fresh snow, breaking trail for much of the remainder of the ride. Stopping only a few times to pull sleds out of the deep powder they got stuck in, we had a great time. All quite tired when we reached the car at the end of the tour everyone was all smiles, recounting the deep powder turns and the few small jumps we hit, giving even us beginners a taste of flying.

Yesterday’s Powder Videos
Posted on07. Mar, 2010 by Andy.
Yesterday's powder was so much fun, we decided to post more videos!Craig's Ridge/Westside- barring the first 20 seconds of me getting my bearings (and maybe swearing about it, sorry!), Craig hits this jump on Westside like a champ!
Keith's shot down Buckshot- powder was in the trees today!
Ramrod- This one's long, but a nice tree run if I could only keep my hand straight. :)
-See you in the Deep!

Winter has Returned!
Posted on06. Mar, 2010 by Andy.
After several weeks of what seemed like a repeat of Ice Age 2:The Melt Down, winter has finally returned in the 'Boat and locals were up bright and early this morning tasting 9 new in 24. What fell yesterday squashed nicely into the base, filling in between bumps, holes, and patches, so that when today's half-a-foot fell, it was icing on the cake.We made turned chair on Four Points into a rare lap back to Storm for what was our best run down Cyclone all year. 5" new on a fresh mow, meow. Big swooping GS turns, we cut first tracks down that baby all the way to a slightly bumped Drop Out for 11th chair on Storm, not bad. They were all chomping at the bit, and we'd had one long, gloriously powderific run. No complaints.
Storm Peak Express took us through the soupy morning fog - visibility, one chair - to the top, where it was hard to shake off the vertigo on Storm Face, but once you got dropped over the ridge the snow was buttery and deep in the meadow, already push piles on Sunset (First Trackers delight this morning!), and then glorious again in Moonlight Trees.
Where to next was the big question, and we decided to taste the trees- as normal, 1230, 130, and Wristband- that big open glade below the trees between Rolex and Westside, tasty. Ramrod, Buckshot, treeline off Sunshine, Westside Ridge; everywhere was nicely frosted with thick buttery, cream cheese-tastic Champagne Powder!

March 3-4 – Spring is Here
Posted on05. Mar, 2010 by DagnyMcKinley.
7:00 am. 18 degrees.
Days have been reaching the 40’s and while it’s hard for the dogs to run in the heat, I’m ready for a little sunshine and an end to winter!
Had a tour with Kris where I couldn’t do anything right, but that’s par for the course, so didn’t let it get to me. I think Kris may be a little stressed about spring and the trail not lasting too much longer. A little snow the last two days will hopefully save us. The day after, I had a tour with Stu-bird where the women had been out every year for the last four years, so they knew what they were doing. They had lots of love for the dogs which was nice.
Danny, the cover dog is becoming quite the star. Tourists are taking pictures of him and he’s handling fame well.
I forgot to mention I had a save about a week ago. It was a Superman save, where you drive the snowmobile up to the runaway sled and jump, praying you catch the bar of the moving sled, which I did. You’re then in the position of having your arms on, but your body dragging behind you. The next challenge is climbing up the runners of the sled to a standing position, where hopefully you can stop the sled.
Because the father and daughter had been driving together, there was no weight in the sled, so even with both feet on the brake, pulling up as hard as I could on an uphill, we didn’t stop. The others caught up and all was well. Stu-bird suggested I jump with an anchor to help stopping. I told him I didn’t want to die.
I’m not that coordinated. Jumping and catching the sled is lucky. Jumping with a razor sharp anchor in my hand is tempting fate.

March 2, 2010 – Another One Bites the Dust
Posted on02. Mar, 2010 by DagnyMcKinley.
Every year we lose a few good workers at the end of February and into March. B-bear had his knee hurt and now Beagle has left us. He was offered a job in Arizona that he couldn’t turn down. It was sad to see him go, but we had a great party the night before. So now it’s E-bear, Joel, Stu-bird, Kris, Sara and me. Not a lot of people.
The sun’s been shining down at a balmy 38 degrees the last couple of days and could spell disaster for our trail. We need a bit more snow if we’re going to make it into April. It’s been a surprisingly dry, cold winter. Now that spring is here, I’m not sure I want more snow, except that it’s hard on the dogs to run in warm weather.
I revisited the site of the dog sledding fiasco last night. The hill I fell off on was really pretty steep, so I felt a bit better about that. It was a beautiful night with the sun warming me and Alma Rose on the way up and the sun set greeting us on the way down. The views from up there spread out over Routt County and stirred the adventerous part of my soul.
At the kennel, the dogs have been wreaking havoc with the full moon. I was met by three loose dogs the other day, which wasn’t a surprise as soon as I saw the cute blue-eyed female that had pulled out of her collar and was sitting demurely waiting for the gentlemen’s attentions.
I got them all put back, only to have another male run up to me with kisses. His line had caught with another and released him. The last dog ran back to his house from admist the other dogs as soon as he saw baited water coming around.
The tours have been smooth with some great guests who were enthusiastic and respectful of the dogs.
I even got a day to go through and spend some time with each of them like I normally do in the summer.
Little Turbo who had a bit of a bug is back and full of energy. I was scolded at Kris’ house when he had the holiday party that Turbo hadn’t jumped up on anyone in three days except me. We have a special bond, Turbo and I. He’s a sweet little dog!
More to report soon.
