2010 Mtn Resorts Behind the Boat Watersports Camp

July 20-23 with STARS and Adaptive Adventures

Despite some intermittent stormy weather, this week's 5th annual Watersports Camp outdid itself. With double the local participation as well as veterans and visitors from all over Colorado and as far as Idaho, and of course the usual amazing coaching and volunteers, the two days on Bald Eagle Lake were a huge success. In addition, half a dozen of the participants were brand new to wakeboarding and waterskiing including Edward (below) who spends his time between Steamboat and Georgia.

The Watersports camp is the 5th and final camp in the 2010 STARS Adaptive Camp Series lineup in Steamboat, and a great way to end the season with a relaxed yet fun lakeside atmosphere where families and friends can come hang out and watch/photograph the watersporters.

The coaches from Adaptive Adventures are truly amazing at not only introducing these fun sports to newcomers, they are adept at pushing campers to their limits and beyond with new techniques and equipment every year. Local 8 year old Kyle (below) was able to let go of the outriggers this year and cruise the lake independently on a waterski. While Kyle loves skiing Steamboat in the winter, he "could spend all summer waterskiing," he loves it so much.

STARS hopes to add equipment in order to have more events like this one next year so local kids like Kyle CAN waterski all summer!

Today about half the camp members will be floating the Colorado with Colorado River Company to conclude this year's 3-day event.

Music on the Green – Yampa River Botanic Park

The Yampa River Botanic Park, located between downtown Steamboat and the mountain, is in the middle of the Music on the Green summer concert series. Every Thursday afternoon, from 12-1, the Botanic Park sponsors a group of musicians to come and play a set on the large lawn in the middle of the Park. This week Missed the Boat, a local bluegrass band, played an upbeat and fun set. The weather was beautiful this week and the park was packed with people. One of my favorite activities in town in the summer, if is definitely worth checking out if you are in Steamboat in the coming weeks. The Botanic Park is also a popular setting for weddings in Steamboat.

Moo-Tastic Cow Town Ranch Tours

Posted on21. Jul, 2010 by SSCRA Blogger.

If you have not “ponied” up for a Cow Town Ranch Tour yet, you do not know what you are missing!  As a relatively new local, I have been trying to catch one of these for 2 years and it was even better than I expected.

Tours rotate through a variety of area sheep, cattle, hay, and bison ranches. Our tour visited two cattle ranches with quite different backgrounds, but quintessentially the same heart:  loving the land, riding out on horseback to move the cattle, putting up hay and working hard all summer to repair miles of fences damaged by elk and snow.  Intriguing discussion pursued on the economics of ranching – you have to love it to live it – and we learned about the use of conservation easements to preserve the land for agricultural use. After all, it is in large part due to the ranching community and conservation efforts that Steamboat Springs is such a beautiful place to live!

Our resident historians and tour guides, Marsha Daughenbaugh and Jo Stanko, kept us entertained with many stories and facts. We reviewed the Range Wars, previous local crops of strawberries, lettuce and spinach; a bit of mining history; the Old Beef Trail and the area development of the Quarter Horse and Angus Beef.

Tour members came from Iowa, Florida and Australia, just to name a few places. Many good questions addressed the specific challenges to ranching in this environment. The kids, of course, were drawn to the animals. They enjoyed feeding snacks to the horses and throwing sticks and balls to the friendly ranch dogs.

A root beer float provided the perfect finish to a wonderful day.  Come tourists and locals too – Pony up at the Cow Town Ranch Tours!

2010 Cow Town Ranch Tour Dates

Thursday, July 8th-Cattle,Hay and Multi-Animal Ranches

Steamboat Horseback Riding

“A beautiful day horseback riding in Steamboat out at a few Ranch properties”

I woke up early morning on another beautiful day in Steamboat. In a few short hours I experienced and embraced Steamboat’s Western mystique while riding horseback. I sat back and took in all the majestic mountain beauty and held on as I looped through Steamboat’s pristine ranches out side of town. There are so many stunning ranches that allow you to take in the views, western values and have the daily opportunity to go horseback riding here in Steamboat – can’t forget the fresh mountain air! A beautiful summer day I will never forget, with the first-hand look at the local wildlife, wildflower-studded hillsides and vast pines overlooking the valley and mountain areas of Steamboat. No matter what time of day, trail riding allows you to experience a variety of majestic Rocky Mountain terrain. I saw many deer and elk along the way of the Colorado wilderness as well as open meadows and aspen covered hillsides – Absolutely Gorgeous! The ranches throughout Steamboat have so many quality values that go beyond. Can’t wait to get back out!

Favorite Writing Exercise

Posted on20. Jul, 2010 by DagnyMcKinley.

Okay. Here’s my current favorite writing exercise:

Write about your most frightening experience - something that haunts you or terrifies you, could be a memory from childhood, something that happened as a teenager. The moment could be one of embarrassment, shame or fear. Write for 10 or 15 minutes.

Now take that story and place it somewhere in nature - the mountains, the desert, a forest or field, or even the ocean. Turn the people into animals. Take out any speech and replace it with movements and actions. See what you end up with.
