St Patrick’s Day Torchlight Parade & Fireworks Display

A great family event!

The Steamboat Ski & Snowboard School treats tourists and locals to spectacular on-snow parade down the mountain, lit only by torches. In conjunction with the torchlight parades, a fireworks display will illuminate the sky providing a perfect ending to the evening. This event is free and open to the public; the best viewing is in Gondola Square. The parade begins at 7:30pm. If you have any questions feel free to contact me 970.819.6930. Come back to view Steamboat’s St. Patrick’s Day pictures that will be taken on Wednesday, March 17th, 2010.

Mr. Sun, Sun, Mr. Golden Sun so glad you came out to play…for a little while. I am happy to report motorcycle riders, bike riders and t-shirts were in full bloom for a few brief hours this afternoon in Steamboat Springs. I would imagine a few lunches and talks over coffee also moved outside as winter previewed its longtime seasonal guest, spring. The evidence of shorts and flip flops is a testament that for some, the sun is a welcomed sight. However, people of the winter need not worry. As I look out of my window now at five o’clock, the sun is gone and I know for a fact that I will still be scraping snow and ice off my car again tomorrow morning.

As your packing for the drive to Steamboat this weekend for some turns in the snow just remember to throw on a tank top below all those layers. Apres-ski is the perfect time to start working on that summer tan. And, unlike at the beach, no one will stare at you like you are from another planet at the sight of your skin that is as white as snow. You might even get someone to buy you a drink in sympathy.  Besides, the pride and the stories that lie behind that carefully maintained goggle tan is something those beach people will never understand.  Cheers.

Rockslide closes I-70

Posted on09. Mar, 2010 by Sage Local.

The interstate’s closure created a detour to U.S. 40, which went through Steamboat Springs, Colorado. We had many vehicles going through downtown Steamboat due to this breathtaking rockslide. A tremendous rockslide on I-70, which was near Glenwood Springs smashed through a bridge and dumped boulders the size of tractor trailers on the highway, closing a 17-mile stretch of the road. The slide struck at about midnight just west of the Hanging Lake Tunnell in Glenwood Canyon. The collapse caused major problems for truckers and other motorists, who had to travel 200 miles to avoid the slide. They pronounced that as many as 20 boulders, ranging from 3 feet to 10 feet in diameter, his the interstate, Colorado Department of Transportation estimated that the largest rock weighed 66 tons and some were as big as semi trucks. Thankfully no one was injured or on this section of the interstate at that time.

Snowmobiling on Rabbit Ears

Posted on07. Mar, 2010 by Sage Local.

We woke up early yesterday morning to hit the trails up on rabbit ears pass. A 30 minute drive east of town we were all excited to try something a bit different. Taking the day away from skiing we went snowmobiling. I would recommend this to anyone visiting town, even if only here for a short weekend. Jumping on the small sleds we were privileged to take a small tour led by one of my friends. Beginning on the groomed path, we all quickly became accustomed to the dimensions and speed of our sleds and were cruising around 40mph in no time. After gathering ourselves we cruised off trail and glided through some fresh snow, breaking trail for much of the remainder of the ride. Stopping only a few times to pull sleds out of the deep powder they got stuck in, we had a great time. All quite tired when we reached the car at the end of the tour everyone was all smiles, recounting the deep powder turns and the few small jumps we hit, giving even us beginners a taste of flying.

Don't mind if we toot our horns a bit ... Toot Toot!  I'm just incredibly proud of our awesome staff & of our delicious and (very fun) restaurant.  Here are some of the reviews I've found on Old Town Pub.  So glad our favorite patrons are so thoroughly enjoying Steamboat's favorite Pub! Come see us on the corner of 6th & Lincoln.  If you're reading this blog from facebook, click here to see it in full glorious color: http://www.otpblog.typepad.com

Dig into dinner at Old Town Pub, a local favorite. You're in the Wild West, so try the buffalo burger, leaner than beef, but just as juicy. --Sunset Magazine

Old Town Pub is a great authentic spot for locals, families & fun seekers. huge prime rib, juicy burgers, and lots of live music - local & national bands. CV Bistro has amazing cuisine by local ranches and farmers and small wineries. Having a blast eating in the Boat! Today we're skiing and trying out Slopeside. --from NY Times Travel Guide reviewer

Lizzie, A big thanks to Kurt and Megan the rest of your crew for the outstanding service they provided Thurs night for our farewell dinner. Everyone raved about how good the food was and what a great time they had. The dinner was a perfect ending to a perfect ski trip. Thanks Again --Canyon Explorers Ski Club

"A fun spot for pub food" --Urbanspoon reviewer

"Atmosphere was excellent! We were enticed by the prospect of a band (Outformation) playing a show there and at 10 the bar transformed into a really rocking venue. The band sounded great and with the locals noodle dancing like their lives depended on it in front of me, I felt like I was back in ol' FoCo." --online reviewer

Equally comfortable for a family meal or a night out with the guys, the Old Town Pub enjoys considerable popularity among local residents. The old West décor, with vintage photos of Steamboat Springs and lots of wood, gives the place a classy but fun ambience. The food menu consists of a nice variety of steaks, seafood, wild game, pasta and especially good burgers, and a children's menu is also available. Two full bars supply ice cold beers and cocktails to weary skiers fresh from the slopes, and sports fans like to gather around the five big-screen digital satellite TVs. --10best.com editorial review

Between 5 of us, we tried the Tortilla Chip Encrusted Red Trout, Sesame Seared Yellowfin Tuna and a Buffalo Sirloin Steak.  Entrees with choice of starch ran between $17-$28.  I ordered the Buffalo and this was the first time I'd ever had an actual steak of buffalo, other experiences were always ground.  I became a fan of that meat this night as it was lean, flavorful and satisfying.  I'm a huge fan of "choice" grade beef and though I value tenderness in beef, I wasn't expecting it for buffalo.  I actually had to chew this mofo, with flavor bursting in every carnivorous bite and the horseradish demi that topped the meat was very complementary.  The portions are huge and most in our group could not finish their plates so I got to try everybody's dishes.  The tuna was good with a wasabi sauce and the trout was crunchy and tasty.

Bra Tree Deployment – It’s harder than it looks!

I just stumbled across this Steamboat Bra Tree Deployment video on Youtube.  It's one of the funniest Steamboat videos I've ever come across.  I want to meet these guys!  For all of us who have marveled at the Mardi Gras/Bra Tree from Storm Peak for decades - here's the inside scoop on how to add your favorite brassiere to the mix.  On a side note - one of the best Halloween costumes I've ever seen at Old Town Pub's famous Halloween party was "The Bra Tree Guy".  He had branches stuck to his shirt with beads & bras hanging all over - needless to say, he won the costume contest.  Enjoy the video and feel free to email us with other fun Steamboat videos for our blog.
