Hot Digitty Dog!
Posted on01. Sep, 2010 by SSCRA Blogger.
Join us this weekend at the Stanko Ranch for the 7th Steamboat Stock Dog Challenge. Border collies and their handlers have traveled from all over the U.S. and Canada to compete in a field trial with sheep fresh off the range on one of the most beautiful hay meadows in the valley. Competition runs from 8 in the morning to 5 in the afternoon along with kids activities from 11am-3pm. There will be sheep and an authentic sheep wagon on display as well as information about the sheep and wool industry. Our announcer answers your questions all day and helps you to know what is going on out on the field so you don’t need any knowledge of sheep dogs at all to enjoy this event. Karrie’s Kickass Katering will be providing breakfast burritos and a big barbecue lunch featuring Colorado lamb, beef and pork sandwiches. Just turn at the library and follow the yellow signs to the ranch. This event is free, but your purchases in the souvenir tent help pay the bills! Bring your own shade and chairs (or blankets) as seating is picnic style on the hill overlooking the course. Dogs are welcome but MUST be on leash and well behaved, we ask you to pick up after your dogs and NOT to leave dogs in your car as the heat is dangerous. So come on out and enjoy our last days of summer in the beautiful Yampa Valley!

This ain’t no bull! Dirt will fly this Sunday
Posted on31. Aug, 2010 by SSCRA Blogger.
The Rocky Mountain Bull Bash PBR is this Sunday September 5th this event showcases the top 45 professional bull riders as they compete against top ranked bulls in what is sure to be two and a half hours of non stop action!
Top tips from a pro on how to ride a bull**:
1. Start by placing your rope down beside the bull so your help can get a hook on it and get your rope put around the bull.
2. Holding on to each side of the chute you want to ease your toes down on the bulls back and slide them down his side. Do not touch him with your spurs until you are ready to ride.
3. Place your riding hand in your rope with the back side of your hand down. Your pinkie should be right next to the bull’s back bone.
4. Let someone pull your rope tight and wrap the rope once around the part of your hand that is closest to you.
5. Ease up to where you are nearly sitting on your hand.
6. Sit up off your butt. All of your weight will be on the inside of your thighs.
7. Bow your chest out. Remember to breathe!
8. Grab a hold with your spurs!
9. Give the gate hands the go!
10. Enjoy the ride of your life!!!
You can get your tickets at Visitor Center or at the gate.
Gates open at 3 dirt flies at 5!
**Feel free to use these techniques during the (mechanical) Bucking Bull Battle on September 18th during the OktoberWest celebration.

One Fish, Two Fish, Lake Fish, River Fish
Posted on25. Aug, 2010 by SSCRA Blogger.
So, you have been to Steamboat before but have you been fishing? The epic amount of rain that we received over the course of this spring and summer has made for unbelievable fishing conditions in late summer and fall. The local Fletcher Pond is at its prime and is stocked with Rainbow Trout, perfect for kids and families. Small worms or bait is recommended with a light line. Every day I walk along the Yampa River watching fly fisherman; they look so peaceful as they cast their lines in waiting. Steamboat Lake and Stagecoach Reservoir are also reporting great fishing, but it’s recommended to go early or late in the day. Finally, all High Country Lake fishing is reporting good conditions so grab your pole and a partner and enjoy! For more information on fishing businesses in Steamboat, click here.

Dancing to the Beat
Posted on16. Aug, 2010 by SSCRA Blogger.
As part of the Steamboat All Arts Festival, we will be offering workshops in painting, photography, writing and of course DANCE. The African Dance workshop will be held on Saturday, August 21st from 10am-11am at The Depot. Tickets to all the workshops are still available.
“I have always wanted to try African Dance. Sounds of a drum beat, colorful outfits, fast dancing feet, and creative body movements. Who wouldn’t want to give this a whirl? It is an eclectic rhythm from the body and soul. It was something I could watch in awe and think to myself, I have to try that! I had one problem though; I am not a dancer. I never took dance classes as a child, and then in college, I was too intimidated to start dancing at an adult age. I was depriving myself of the elements of dance because I was nervous? I had to put that fear aside. Fortunately, a friend told me about the African Dance classes offered in Steamboat Springs. She expressed how wonderful the African Dance community is and how they welcome people of all ages, ability, and levels. It would be OKAY to be the “new” dancer, and no one would laugh or make fun of me. Okay, I thought… what do I really have to lose?
So, last winter I went to my very first dance class and African Dance it was! Although my uncoordinated feet couldn’t keep up, I was smiling and loving it the entire time! The teachers and other attendees were very welcoming, encouraging, and fun. There were even other “newbies” in the class. I learned all about African Dance, culture, drumming, formation, and even freedom of expression. It felt great to stomp my feet, shake my body, and whale my hands around all while dancing to the drums. I had a blast and met some great people. I then made it a goal to continue.
As a couple months and a few dance classes went by, I thought it would be fun to bring my sisters (who are visiting Steamboat for the summer) to an African Dance class. They too had a blast. We were dancing, smiling, and laughing the entire time. I still consider myself a newbie, but the essentials of African Dance never get old. Together, we all had an amazing time. I encourage anyone – young or old, new or pro to give this a try. I promise, it won’t be short of an ear to ear grin with a stomping, shaking, and drum-ful of a good time.

Steamboat Springs in Sunset Magazine
Posted on11. Aug, 2010 by SSCRA Blogger.
Have you picked up your copy of the August Sunset Magazine? If not, head to your nearest newsstand and pick one up. Steamboat Springs was featured as the Mountain Weekend destination in a feature called “Colorado Day Trip Steamboat Springs.” This two page spread hits on many summer time highlights of the Yampa Valley. With WONDERFUL photos and countless helpful hints throughout the two page spread the author, Boulder based Elisa Bosley touches on the most important this to see and experience while in Steamboat.
- “Ride the River” – Great recommendations of where and how to take advantage of the Yampa River.
- “Play in the Bubbles” – Details about Steamboat’s Old Town Hot Springs
- “Cool Off” – The article highlights the new Sweat Pea Café.
- “Hit the Trail” – Be sure to check out Emerald Mountain for a super mountain bike ride or great hike.
In the “4 more wild rides in the ‘Boat” the magazine encourages all visitors to Steamboat Springs to check out the Steamboat Springs Pro Rodeo Series and “cheer on cowboys”, enjoy a mountain bike ride at the Steamboat Ski Area, take part in a cattle drive and live out your childhood fantasies at the country’s only “heavy equipment play arena” Dig This.
The real question becomes, what isn’t there to do in Steamboat Springs.

“SEUSSICAL, JR” this weekend!
Posted on10. Aug, 2010 by SSCRA Blogger.
This past Saturday, around 25 community folks and visiting family members were busy sawing, painting and helping to make magic at the Steamboat Springs High School theatre. The air was filled with laughter, friendly ribbing, freshly cut pine, and great tunes from KRAI. Why all this flurry of activity? It’s the beginning of what is affectionately known, particularly in the world of community theatre, as “hell week”, the week immediately before a show opens.
As the Director of this amazing and talented cast of local middle and high schoolers and dedicated (and pretty worn out) group of parents and local professionals, I need to say how excited I am for you to experience the beauty and joy of our production of “Seussical, Jr.” this coming weekend. We have all been pouring our hearts into this wonderful little musical that is now one of the most produced shows in community and school theatres all over America, and the Steamboat Springs Arts Council and Steamboat Community Players are helping bring it to our town!
Based on beloved Dr. Seuss characters, the story centers around Horton the Elephant, who finds himself faced with a double challenge–not only must he protect his tiny friend Jojo (and all the invisible Whos) from a world of dangers, but he must guard an abandoned egg, left to his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him, the only one who recognizes “his kind and his powerful heart.” Do the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community emerge triumphant? Well, what do you think (wink)?
So, please plan to join us this Thursday (when it’s “Buy One, Get One Free” night, if you purchase your tickets in advance!), Friday or Saturday nights from 7:00-8:30pm at the SS High School. Tickets in advance may be purchased at the Arts Depot (879-9008), or by visiting Epilogue Book Company downtown (879-2665, Lincoln Ave. between 8th and 9th, cash only). Both children and the young at heart will enjoy the sparkling, colorful sets and costumes as well as outstanding performances from our young people, and hopefully will be moved by simple yet profound messages in the story. Though this is a show many children will enjoy, we do strongly recommend it for those five and older, due primarily to its length (one and 1/2 hours, including intermission).
We hope to see you this weekend for some of the most magical moments you’ve had all summer. We’ve been waiting for YOU!”
