Steamboat Springs offers so many hiking trails in surrounding areas. If you’re planning a trip to Steamboat, then I recommend you to try out some of Steamboat’s best hiking trails. The photo above is hiking near the Flattops, but there are so many more that offer stunning picturesque landscapes and views that go beyond. The area surrounding Steamboat is absolutely packed with fantastic hiking adventures.

Right out of our back door are Mt. Werner and Storm Peak, which are covered with trails. Adjacent to town is the ever-popular Fish Creek Falls hike, which I consider one of the top waterfalls in Colorado along with a longer scenic hike to Long Lake from here. Another is Rabbit Ears Peak the wildflowers are gorgeous. Further outside town is the Mad Creek Trailhead, which serves as a portal into the endlessly explorable Mt. Zirkel Wilderness.

Steamboat comes to life in the spring and summer seasons, with green trails promising invigorating hikes everywhere you look. Whatever the contours of your sense of adventure, Steamboat Springs is a place brimming with possibility, one that knows no lethargy.

Snowboard Film ‘Deeper’ Coming to Steamboat

Posted on16. Aug, 2010 by Sage Local.

Time to mark your calendars! While the temps are still reaching the upper 80s, the buzz about the upcoming ski season has already started. Fueled by many different events – season ticket prices currently at their cheapest, the big tent sale coming up, and now the first official (to my knowledge) date for a snowboard movie has been scheduled. A different look at life as a snowboarder, the athletes in this film go to new levels to find the perfect lines. Following their journey ‘Deeper’ promises to be one of the most fun movie events of the fall. The Steamboat Grand is hosting the event on October 7th. For those who have never been to a ski/snowboard film before, it is truly a fun event. The yells, screams and excitement from the crowd often make the dialogue a bit difficult to follow, but the atmosphere and the energy get you pump for the upcoming season. Check out the synopsis below for some more information on the film ‘Deeper’

‘From the award winning producers at Teton Gravity Research (TGR), in partnership with Jeremy Jones, comes the most progressive big mountain snowboarding film to date, “DEEPER.” Follow Jeremy and other top freeriders as they travel to the world’s snowboarding meccas and venture past the boundaries of helicopters, snowmobiles, and lifts to explore an untouched realm. Hang on tight as Jeremy Jones faces the biggest challenges he has ever encountered in snowboarding. All night hikes, sleeping on peaks, camping 65 miles from civilization, 20 below temperatures, 10 day storms, and 20 mile days bring the adventure back into riding. Deeper puts the viewer in the athletes’ boots; from the trials to the tribulations, to mind-boggling breakthroughs in the sport of snowboarding.’

If you are interested in traveling a bit outside of Steamboat – Teton Gravity Research is also releasing a 3D film this fall ‘Light the Wick.’ It appears as though the closest 2 venues for now are in Boulder and Denver.

The 7th Annual Steamboat Wine Festival had another successful year, drawing a around 3,000 people to different parts of the festivals and events. ‘The three-day event features daily seminars on everything from whiskey to wine glass shapes, and nightly gatherings offer tastings from international wineries and some local restaurants.’ The events occurred all around Steamboat, the venues ranging from downtown to the Torian Plum Plaza in the mountain area. The festival began with a kickoff celebration Thursday evening, and continued with public tasting events Friday and Saturday afternoons, and seminars throughout the weekend. In addition to being a fun-event marked on calendars around the country the ‘festival has raised about $150,000 for nonprofit groups such as Steamboat Adaptive Recreational Sports and the Steamboat Springs Arts Council in its seven-year history.’ The Steamboat Wine Festival is a great event in town for locals and visitors to both enjoy and we are already looking forward to next year!

Downhill Mtn Bike Trails Planned for Summer 2011

Posted on05. Aug, 2010 by Sage Local.

Steamboat’s pursuit to also be know by the moniker Bike Town USA has many thinking of ways to improve Steamboat’s biking scene. Currently improving Steamboat’s downhill-only trails is on the forefront of the discussion.

‘Jim Schneider, ski area vice president of skier services, said the first two trails for what will become a bike park in the central part of Mount Werner have been mapped, walked and flagged by renowned trail-building company Gravity Logic, and the proposed paths are being studied by the U.S. Forest Service to ensure they meet all the right safety and environmental guidelines…’We are told it takes two months to build one of those trails, so maybe if we start in mid-May when things are melting off, we can still end up with six weeks to two months of the riding season, we think this all will provide us a bike park that could rival anything in North America.’ The hope is the increase in strictly downhill trails will encourage many to come to Steamboat for the Biking trails, helping increase the summer tourism in town.

In an article published earlier this year in the Steamboat Piliot about Steamboat’s pursuit of the name Bike Town USA, Robin Craigen, president of Routt County Riders, the area’s hard-working bicycle club said, ‘it’s not like we’d have to go out there and build some mountains and some trails. We need to start identifying the assets we already have.’

Getting out for a bike ride this morning on Emerald  was a treat as always.  Routt County Riders and the City of Steamboat have built and incredible trails system up there.  It will be exciting to see the development of the Steamboat Bike trails both on the Ski Mountain and around town in the next few years given all of the great plans that are being laid out right now.
