With the fall steadily approaching and winter quick on its heels, I realized this past week that I needed to get out for a few more of those ‘epic,’ long bike rides I have managed to put-off this past summer. This weekend I set off with a friend early Sunday morning and rode from Dumont Lake to the bottom of Mount Werner. Very similar to the course that was tackled last weekend by Lance Armstrong and the rest of the Continential Divide Race, the trail was in perfect condition with only a few fallen trees over the 25 mile ride. The ride begins below the Rabbit Ears on Rabbit Ears Pass and continues down eventually meeting up with the Steamboat Ski Area. The start of the ride passes Long Lake and the many other small lakes in the backcountry; starting at over 10,000 ft it was a beautiful, cool day, perfect for a long mountain bike ride. At one of the lakes we passed along the way we met a fisherman who said it was his first time back fishing in the Steamboat backcountry in 55 years. And he said that not much had changed. A comforting thought and as we continued on our ride, we too hoped that we return and still accomplish a similar feat in 55 years. And while the temperatures crawled back up into the 70s as we got to the bottom of the mountain, the cool, mid 50 degree weather that we spent the morning shivering our way through stayed in the back of our minds, reminding us and getting us exciting for the new season just around the corner.

Serving traditional Mexican food, Fiesta Jalisco is one of the best Mexican Restaurants in town. The carne asada is a local’s favorite for good reason – The seasonings will have you smacking your lips for days. It’s not spicy, but the portions are big, the flavors fantastic and if you make friends with the staff while you’re there, you might get a shot of ‘the hoof’ tequila. ‘The hoof’ is Fiesta Jalisco’s homemade tequila that goes down smoothly and perfectly compliments dinner or dessert. The tortilla soup is another popular dish as are the fajitas and burritos. The atmosphere is friendly, casual and relaxed, making this a great stop for families and kids of all ages.

Bellas wine bar is a fairly new addition to Steamboat’s Downtown. The cellar-like atmosphere lends itself to the fragrant aromas of wine and cheese. The space is uncluttered, using stone walls for effect and pillowed benches for seating. While the space has an old-world flavor, the feel is as sophisticated as the wine menu. The wine selections changes constantly and are filled with varieties that set the selection apart from other restaurants in town. The piano is open for anyone who has an itch to tinkle the ivories, and a music system is set up for a late-night atmosphere. The crowd varies and includes young and old. There’s room for anyone who enjoys good conversation and a delectable glass of wine.

“Hiking Rabbit Ears Pass in Steamboat Springs, Colorado! Summer 2010″

Steamboat comes to life in the spring and summer seasons, with green trails promising invigorating hikes everywhere you look. Rabbit Ears Trail is one of my favorites here in Steamboat! The hike to Rabbit Ears Peak, named for its twin rock pillars visible from the highway, begins as a casual walk through a spectacular flower-land. For some hikers, the last .25 mile to the “ears” poses a challenge; to others, it’s a fun rock scramble. Either way, the views near the summit are spectacular.

Once you start climbing Rabbit Ears Pass, be looking on your right for the Muddy Creek and Buffalo Park turn-off signs. When you pass these signs, you’ll be almost there, within about 1 mile, so you need to watch carefully for Dumont Lake sign and proceed on National Forest Road 315. Follow this road for about 1.5 miles until you come to the old stone monument on your left. Turn left at the monument and into the small parking area. The trailhead for Rabbit Ears Peak is straight through the gate that you will see, and continue down the dirt road. In a few short minutes, you’ll see a small market on your right with the number 291. This is where you start your hike to Rabbit Ears Peak.

The photo above is at the Top of Rabbit Ears, the photo below is hiking through meadows of wildflowers.

Whatever the contours of your sense of adventure, Steamboat Springs is a place brimming with possibility, on that knows no lethargy.

If you have a Steamboat Photo & would like to send it in, send it here! – bestofsteamboat@gmail.com
